All work and no play…seeking the ultimate work-life balance

One of the main reasons people have for seeking self-employment is an increase in flexibility, whether that is to sit around family responsibilities or simply a preferred lifestyle choice. And I can assure you that it is more than achievable.

Although the focus of my coaching is on the business side of your life, I would give one piece of advice for ‘life’ aspect of your ‘work-life balance’…be as focused on the ‘life’ as you are on the ‘work’. Being self-employed can be hard at times, and you will need the ‘life’ time to work just as hard for you, in the right ways.

The ‘life’ part of the balance is what you will need to give you calm or adrenaline, peace or pace, whatever works for you, but make sure you know what works for you. If your ‘life’ time is what keeps you happy and motivated, that will only bring greater success and clarity to your ‘work’ time.

For me, I love mountain biking, I love being outdoors. If I didn’t commit to spending time outside, on my bike, I wouldn’t have as much ability to remain focused and dedicated during my ‘work’ time. I also love music and spend some time producing my own music. I know that going to the gym really helps keep me focused. And in knowing that these things make me happy and keep me balanced, I can guarantee that my ‘life’ time works just as hard for me as my ‘work’ time.

It isn’t always easy to fit in the ‘life’ time, but it really is an essential element that deserves some time and attention. It doesn’t matter what you do with your ‘life’ time, as long as it works for you and will support you during your ‘work’ time. Remaining committed to your ‘life’ time is one of the smartest business decisions you can make, giving you a clearer and more focused mind, and giving you more motivation to ensure you can maintain that flexibility as you grow your business.

Know what works for you, what you love and why you work so hard on those ‘work’ days!
